LGBT+ History Month is an annual celebration that takes place every February in the UK. It is a time to recognise and honour the contributions and achievements of the LGBT+ community throughout history. This month-long observance aims to educate people about the struggles and triumphs of the LGBT+ community, promote equality, and foster a more inclusive society.
What is LGBT+ History Month?
LGBT+ History Month was established to raise awareness of the history and experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals. It provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in the fight for LGBT+ rights and to acknowledge the ongoing challenges faced by the community. The month is marked by various events, including educational programmes, cultural activities, and community gatherings, all aimed at celebrating diversity and promoting understanding.
A Conversation with Rakesh Kachhela; our Head of Employer Engagement and Emerging Markets
We had the pleasure of speaking with Rakesh, who is a proud member of the LGBT+ community. Rakesh shared his thoughts on the significance of LGBT+ History Month and how he celebrates and raises awareness on this important topic.
What does LGBT+ History Month mean to you?
"LGBT+ History Month is for everyone, whether you work in education, a museum, a library, or an art gallery, a business, a service, or are a member of a network/social group or an individual. For me, LGBT+ History Month was created to claim our past, celebrate our present, and create our future."
What do you do to celebrate or help raise awareness on the topic of LGBT+ history?
"Pride Month serves as a reminder to celebrate diversity, promote equality, and support the LGBTQ+ community. I often volunteer my time and skills with LGBTQ+ organisations. For instance, during Pride Month, my partner Mark and I volunteer at the Asda Pride Network. This is such a great event, and volunteering allows you to make a meaningful difference while connecting with like-minded individuals."
How can people show support and solidarity for the LGBTQ+ community during LGBT+ History Month and throughout the year?
"Take time to educate yourself about LGBT+ history, culture, and current issues. Understanding the struggles and achievements of the LGBT+ community can help foster empathy, respect, and inclusivity. Resources such as books, documentaries, and online articles can provide valuable insights."
What do you think is the purpose of LGBTQ+ History Month?
"The purpose of LGBTQ+ History Month is to educate and inform. With so many people unaware of LGBTQ+ events and figures in the past, I've organised with some of my friends to watch a documentary focusing on the struggles and successes of the fight for LGBTQ+ rights in the UK. Documentaries like 'Tom Daley: Illegal to Be Me' and 'Louis Theroux's Transgender Kids' help to engage audiences beyond the specific group they depict. I will also be attending the CineQ Queer Film Festival in Birmingham with a few friends."
LGBT+ History Month is a vital observance that encourages us to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and work towards a more inclusive future. By educating ourselves and others, volunteering, and participating in community events, we can show our support and solidarity for the LGBT+ community, not just during this month, but throughout the year. Let's continue to promote equality, celebrate diversity, and create a world where everyone is respected and valued for who they are.
